SunSDR2 DX transceiver + E-Coder2 control panel
This kit includes a SunSDR2 DX transceiver and an E-Coder2 control panel. The panel complements software control with a physical tuning dial, knobs and programmable buttons for quick frequency changes and access to frequently used functions. Headphones, a microphone, a CW paddle and a footswitch can be connected to the panel, bringing the controls and audio connections to the operator’s desk. This combination is convenient for both everyday operation and remote control of the transceiver.
SunSDR2 DX: a 100W HF/VHF transceiver in a compact aluminum chassis. 100W on HF, up to 80W on 6M and up to 8W on 2M (144–148 MHz), two independent software receivers, 2.6 kg including the fan. Designed and assembled in Taganrog, with support directly from the engineers.
100W and the DDC/DUC architecture
Direct sampling on receive (DDC) and direct conversion on transmit (DUC), separate receive and transmit paths
16-bit LTC2209 ADC at 160 MHz: an honest dynamic range for dense pileups and contests
Well-designed heat dissipation: a quiet 140 × 140 mm fan and stable operation through long digital-mode transmit cycles
Two independent receivers
2 software receivers with a SubRX in each, reception from 0.1-65 and 95-155 MHz
Panorama up to 312 kHz and a wideband Bandscope up to 80 MHz
Simultaneous reception on different HF bands (in this case the wide filter is used), split operation on a DX, a full SO2R position with peripheral control via ExtCtrl
Operating scenarios
Home shack: full power with no external amplifier, frequency tuning and quick control via the E-Coder2 panel instead of a mouse
Contest position: SO2R/SO2V, split in a dense pileup, a CW skimmer over TCI
DXpeditions: full power in a compact chassis, proven by dozens of expeditions from the tropics to the high Arctic (list below)
Digital modes: confident operation through long FT8 transmit cycles
VHF: standalone operation on the 2M band, connection to the PA50WV VHF amplifier, transverter support
Satellites (QO-100): hardware provision for full duplex and transverter operation, a first case already worked in an expedition
Mobile operation: vehicle antennas with a triple-magnet mount are available in the accessories section.
The ExpertSDR3 ecosystem and the TCI protocol
The free ExpertSDR3 for the whole range of radio equipment, updates are free
The open web-socket TCI 2.1 protocol: loggers, skimmers and digital-mode software connect to ExpertSDR3 with no virtual COM ports and no audio cables. The catalog of compatible software keeps growing, the specification is published. For programs without TCI there is the RadioSync bridge (CAT, OmniRig)
The E-Coder2 control panel: an ergonomic tuning knob for dense pileups, its own audio path with headset, key and footswitch inputs
For researchers: direct I/Q data access, MATLAB/Python integration, Ethernet control.
Native remote operation (ERS)
Expert Remote System (ERS) access is included: full control of the transceiver from anywhere in the world, from a browser or from ExpertSDR3
Connection via the ExpertCloud cloud
Controls at the remote end: the E-Coder2 panel, with footswitch, key and headset plugged into it
Proven in DXpeditions
Dozens of DXpeditions over 7 years, operation in harsh climates from the tropics to the high Arctic:
TU5PCT (Côte d'Ivoire, February 2022) 40 307 QSO
TY0RU (Benin, October 2022) 124 734 QSO
5V7RU (Togo, November 2022) 102 301 QSO
3Y0J (Bouvet Island, February 2023) 18 455 QSO (the expedition was cut short by a storm, operating with the emergency equipment kit only)
FW5K (Wallis and Futuna, 2023) 59 528 QSO
V55LA (Namibia, November 2024) 35 500 QSO
9U1RU (Burundi, 2025) 179 831 QSO
RI1FJL (Franz Josef Land, August 2026) 159 840 QSO (world records on 30m and for the total QSO count for European DXCC)
RI1FJZ (Alexandra Land, 81° North, September 2026) in progress / final log is being compiled
Hardware headroom
ALC*: input for external power amplifiers, currently controlled via ExtCtrl
Full Duplex*: full-duplex operation
Predistortion*: transmit-signal predistortion for a cleaner signal, no external devices required
* Hardware support is built in, software implementation is planned in future ExpertSDR3 updates.
If an external amplifier provides the power and minimum weight and size are the priority: see the SunSDR2 PRO.
